TurboTax Updates

Use one of these methods to update your TurboTax 2010 software:

TurboTax can automatically check for updates when you start your TurboTax program (if you have an Internet connection and have set your update preferences to automatically check for updates). If updates are available, you can get them right away or wait until later.

You can ask TurboTax to check for updates. If updates are available, you can get them right away or wait until later.

In TurboTax for Windows, select Check for Updates from the Online menu.

In TurboTax for Mac, select Check for Updates from the TurboTax menu.
If updating fails when you start TurboTax or when you select Check for Updates, you can manually download and install federal updates.

If you don't have an Internet connection, you can order the free update CD.

Remember, TurboTax software is a intuitive easy to use product line and updates are always a step forward. When you do update you pretty much always find a easier to use program with help and tips on every screen to ensure your tax filing will be a pleasant experience.

How to Update TurboTax

Updates contain the latest tax-year revisions and forms for your TurboTax desktop software. (If you use TurboTax Online, you can stop reading – they take care of the updates for you!)

To use TurboTax software, you'll need an Internet connection so you can download the required TurboTax updates. We strongly recommend a high-speed broadband connection (cable, DSL, etc.) due to the potentially large size of the update files.

How do I update TurboTax?
You can check for updates at any time by opening TurboTax and then selecting Check for Updates from the Online menu (or the TurboTax menu if you're using the Mac version).

Use the Automatic Update option to download updates whenever you're connected to the Internet, whether TurboTax is running or not. Automatic updating will not affect your Internet connection speed, and you can install the updates at your convenience.

If you can't update through TurboTax because of errors or a slow connection, try downloading and installing a manual update. Manual updates can even be downloaded from a different computer, saved on a flash drive (or burned to a CD) and then installed on the TurboTax computer.

Why Do I Need to Update TurboTax?

It is important to update TurboTax throughout the December-to-April tax season to incorporate the latest versions of forms, the most recent tax law changes, product improvements, and bug fixes.

You can work on your return without updating your TurboTax software, but before you e-file or print your return for mailing, you'll be asked to update.

Changing your TurboTax Update Settings

TurboTax for Windows

Open your TurboTax software.
From the Online menu in TurboTax, select Updater Preferences.
Select the option you want and click OK.

TurboTax for Mac

Open your TurboTax software.
From the TurboTax menu, select Preferences.
Select or clear the Check for updates automatically checkbox.

TurboTax can leave you a little disconcerted by the frequent fixes, even as the season is upon us and April 15 approaches. There have now been a dozen updates, some with half a dozen or more fixes. The most recent update was last week. Many fixes are functional -- preventing glitches and crashes.

But many affect your calculation. Most of these seem to be minor, but some are not. "Fixed erroneously qualifying for the First-Time Homebuyer Credit" is one of the latter. Every release is beta to a great extent. The government keeps changing the rules. TT actually has a deadline that must be met, as opposed to, say, USB 3.0. Some updates were unavoidable -- allowing deductible donations for Haiti. Kudos to TT for being transparent and forthright about its updates.

this is truly demonstrating the impenetrable complexity of the United States taxing system. The system is a bloody nightmare. In a perfect world, you wouldn't need a 176 MB program to do your taxes.
