How is the Freedom Edition different from the Free Edition?
These similar-sounding TurboTax products are geared toward different needs. The TurboTax Freedom Edition is geared towards lower-income tax filers, regardless of their tax return complexity. It is only offered through the IRS Free File Alliance (FFA) website program. No upgrades are available, but state tax returns are free as well.
The TurboTax Free Edition can be used by higher-income tax filers but it only handles simple tax returns that can be done on (1040EZ and some 1040A returns). Upgrades and add-ons, such as TurboTax PLUS and Audit Defense, are available for additional cost.
